The killers of the ANC branch leader in eThekwini may have targeted the headman (induna) that he was protecting as a bodyguard.

Sipho Dlamini was killed on Saturday morning when unknown gunmen opened fire on a car he was driving with induna Lungisani Mkhathini and another person who was also a bodyguard. Makhathini who was injured during the attack, is an induna under the Minini traditional council under inkosi Phathisizwe Luthuli in Umgababa, south of Durban. Dlamini and the two occupants were returning from a local ANC youth event in the area.

Speaking on Sunday, inkosi Luthuli said he does not believe that Dlamini’s death is politically related, saying he suspects the shooting is linked to the ongoing dispute over his position as induna.

“I fear for my life too. I call on police and Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) to thoroughly investigate the matter,” said Luthuli.

Inkosi Phathisizwe Luthuli of the Mnini traditional council said the ANC leader's killing may be linked to a dispute over traditional leadership.

In a statement issued by the ANC in eThekwini, it hailed Dlamini as a dedicated leader who served the Umgababa community as a councillor between 2011 and 2016.
