I suspect many people who are on the wrong side of the law couldn't wait for the month of July to end. It felt like the longest month of the year, eclipsing even the depressing January.
It started with KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi revealing shocking things about the interconnection of power and influence between politicians and crime lords who control the underworld.
Not long after, the police minister, Senzo Mchunu, was given time off from his official duties pending an investigation. That was followed by the national deputy commissioner, General Hamilton Sibiya, who was forced to go on leave pending an investigation. What followed were many characters like Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala, Brown Mogotsi and other notable characters.
Recently, there was a breakthrough in the murder of DJ Sumbody, whose real name was John Sefoka, with the arrest of four men who are also linked to the murder of another entertainer, DJ Vintos.
One of the prime suspects in the murder of DJ Sumbody was Katiso Molefe. When he was arrested, Joburg City Council member Kenny Kunene, an ex-convict, was there. His story of why he was there when the police made an arrest didn't check out. Like Mchunu denying any knowledge of Mogotsi and Matlala, Kunene said he doesn't know Molefe. He has been removed from his council position, and rightly so. Just when we thought July was over, police made a breakthrough in the murder of Sindiso Magaqa and a DA councillor, Nhlalayenza Ndlovu. We also have Deputy President Paul Mashatile dealing with his R29 million property in Cape Town. I'm sure I've missed a few incidents that July brought us. Farewell to an unbelievable month.| Sbu Zulu, Johannesburg
