The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal applauds the swift and compassionate leadership shown by the Deputy Minister of Employment and Labour, comrade Ntuthuko “Jomo” Sibiya, following the tragic incident that claimed a young life at Homii Properties in Durban.
Sibiya’s immediate response, personally meeting the Dlamini family to convey condolences and brief them on the department’s investigation, reflects the values of transparency, accountability, and empathy that the ANC upholds.
The ANC welcomes the full-scale investigation launched by the Department of Employment and Labour from 22 October 2025, aimed at uncovering the cause of the accident and ensuring accountability. We note the commitment to finalise the probe within 90 days, underscoring the urgency and seriousness with which this matter is being handled.
We also commend the swift enforcement action taken after the inspection, including the closure of a second lift in the same building and the decision to extend safety checks to all lifts managed by the same company. These steps demonstrate proactive governance and a strong commitment to public safety. The ANC further supports the department’s collaboration with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to ensure that justice is served and accountability is upheld.
Equally, the ANC commends all members of society who have stood in solidarity with the Dlamini family, offering comfort and support during this deeply difficult time. Sibiya’s actions reflect true servant leadership, leadership that listens, acts decisively, and prioritises people’s lives. We extend our deepest condolences to the Dlamini family and wish a speedy recovery to their child who remains in hospital.
The ANC calls for justice to prevail and for this tragedy to serve as a catalyst for stronger occupational safety standards across the country.| Fanle Sibisi ANC KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson
