A Cape Flats teenager is set to fly to Brazil - thanks to a youth development programme at a police station.
Leroy September, 16, of Heideveld has been selected for the South African schools soccer team to take part in an international event in Brazil in July.
Leroy has been on the Youth Leaders Against Crime Project recently introduced by Manenberg police.
He said he had learned that through sport he and other youths could stay clear of crime and gangsterism.
Leroy, a Grade 11 pupil at the Star International School in Athlone, plays for the school's soccer team and as a midfielder with the Jordan Callies soccer club in Heideveld.
But to make his dream come true, he still needs R11 000 towards the cost of his trip.
For this reason Manenberg police members are soon going to collect funds and help organise events to raise money.
Station commissioner Kishor Harri has appealed to businesses and the community to help the young sportsman.
People willing to sponsor Leroy are asked to call the September family on 021 638 4480, or the Manenberg police on 021 638 1101 and 021 637 4600.
