The South African Football Association (SAFA) has defended Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos amid rising unfounded allegations of racism and sexism.

The controversy erupted after Broos publicly expressed his frustrations regarding a senior player’s professional conduct, focusing particularly on the influence of the player’s agent, prior to the national team’s upcoming preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Broos’s candid criticism, made during a recent press conference, aimed to address what he perceived as the agent’s premature push for the player’s overseas move. Unfortunately, his comments were misconstrued in media outlets, leading to misguided narratives about his character.

"It is unfortunate that my strong rebuke of the player’s conduct and subsequent comments were misinterpreted as racism and sexism. I distance myself from any accusation of racism and sexism,” Broos stated, adding that he found it “mind-boggling” to be labelled in such a manner, especially given his consistent support for the player in question.

In a statement, SAFA elaborated that Broos’s remarks were intended to illuminate the vital role of football agents in prioritising players’ welfare and long-term development instead of short-term financial gain.

The organisation acknowledged that a language barrier may have compounded the misunderstanding, preventing Broos’s true intent from being effectively communicated during the press interaction.

SAFA firmly emphasised that there was no discriminatory intent behind Broos’s remarks. They further noted that in the four years of his stewardship, accusations of racism, sexism, or any form of discrimination have not been raised by either players or staff.

The Association credited Broos's straightforward approach to addressing key issues within the team as a significant contributing factor to the current strength and unity of the squad.

In recognising Broos’s positive impact on the national team, SAFA highlighted his commitment to upholding high standards and the corresponding dedication demonstrated by the players. As the Bafana Bafana team prepares for the AFCON and sets its sights on the 2026 FIFA World Cup, SAFA urged the public to appreciate the coach’s contributions and unite in support of the team heading into the continental competition.

“SAFA, the players, and the staff are all fully behind coach Broos, and we are now completely focused on our participation in the AFCON in a few days’ time,” the Association said.
