Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Marcelo Allende has stressed the importance of consistency and preparation as his side gears up to face Polokwane City for the second time in just four days.

Sundowns host City at Loftus Versfeld on Sunday, looking to complete a quick double after edging their midweek clash — a result that kept them top of the Betway Premiership standings with 61 points.

Orlando Pirates have kept up the pursuit up to this point and are expected to wrestle for the title until the last day of the season atleast.

Despite that victory, Allende insists the task remains far from straightforward.

“We need to take the experience from the Champions League where we had to win the first leg and the second leg so we have to prepare properly for that as well.”

The comparison with continental football is significant. Sundowns’ CAF Champions League campaign has required them to navigate similar quick turnarounds, where facing the same opponent twice demands both tactical discipline and mental sharpness.

Polokwane are expected to adjust.

After pushing Sundowns to fine margins in midweek, City will likely tweak their approach — whether by tightening their defensive structure further or being more adventurous in transition. That unpredictability is something Allende is wary of.

“We don’t know what kind of approach they’re gonna bring to Loftus this time around but just have to stick to our principles and ideas of playing.”

For Sundowns, that identity has been central to their dominance.

Their ability to control matches through possession and movement allows them to dictate tempo, but patience will once again be required against a compact and organised Polokwane side.

The quick turnaround also places emphasis on recovery.

“We know it’s a long season, with a lot of games and cups and we always want to win every one so it’s important to have good rest and recovery. With the squad that we have, that helps us a lot,” he said.

That squad depth could prove crucial at this stage of the season. With multiple competitions and high-intensity fixtures, Sundowns’ ability to rotate without losing quality gives them an important edge.

Still, Polokwane have already shown they can make things difficult.

Their discipline and structure forced Sundowns to work hard for their midweek win, and a similar pattern is expected at Loftus.

For the Brazilians, the challenge will be to remain composed, avoid frustration and take their chances when they come.

Because in a title race defined by fine margins, repeating a result is never guaranteed — even against the same opponent.
