As the Easter break approaches, from April 3 to 6, parents are grappling with holiday plans: how to keep the children entertained during the school break, and where the family can go.

With domestic flight prices being prohibitively expensive, and road trips, while a cheaper alternative, still significantly costly, this is proving to be a difficult task.

Adding to the overwhelming to-do list is the challenge of ensuring an Easter egg hunt is truly special for the children.

As such, we’ve picked out a few scenic as well as central spots where you can go to ensure they have an unforgettable time in the Mother City.

That said, please be mindful of the following:

  • Book early as the tickets at some places sell out fast.
  • With the weather unpredictable, check if it is an indoor or outdoor hunt.
  • Also, with the V&A Waterfront synonymous with family-friendly Easter activities, check out what options they have, depending on what you are in the mood for.

Meanwhile, here are a few other choices guaranteed to be a fun outing:

Luxe & Little

Young adventurers are invited to explore the stunning garden setting and use their keen eyes to find hidden chocolate treats during the Easter egg hunt.

Beyond the hunt, participants can get creative with a cupcake decorating activity and take their custom-made treat home as a memento. The event is designed for little ones of all ages.

Where: 3 Noreen Ave, Claremont.

When: April 3, 9am to 10.30am or 11am to 12.30pm.

Cost: R250 per child.

Vergelegen Wine Estate

Experience a spectacular and memorable Easter egg hunt in the historic Octagonal Garden, established over 300 years ago.

While this outing is admittedly on the pricier side, the view and overall experience are well worth it.

The hunt is scheduled to start at 9am, weather permitting.

This event is ideal for children under the age of 10. Each ticket includes bunny ears, an Easter egg carrier, and a selection of special Easter eggs for the hunt.

Where: Somerset West.

When: April 5, 8.30am to 11am.

Cost: R425 per child.

Nederburg

Families are invited to enjoy an Easter weekend at this pet-friendly venue.

For adults, the choice is a meal at The Manor or a relaxed picnic under the ancient oak trees.

The children will love the daily Easter hunts throughout the weekend, where finding hidden carrots wins them surprise hampers.

Where: Nederburg, Paarl.

When: April 3 to 6, from 11am to 3.30pm.

Cost: R250 per child.

Spier Wine Farm

Your precious little ones will get to put on their thinking caps, trying to figure out where the Easter Bunny left a nice surprise for them.

Armed with a map, they will get to explore the farm with the clues provided.

While the little ones are kept busy, the adults can enjoy a bit of wine tasting, provided there is one designated driver.

There’s also the option of having a braai, where the kids, still excited from their hunt, can play around in the Elemental Play Garden.

Where: Stellenbosch.

When: April 3 to 6, from 9am to 12.30pm.

Cost: R230 per child.
