South Africans travelling to the United Kingdom will now experience a major change in how visas are issued and managed.

As of today, the UK has officially completed its transition to a fully digital immigration system, replacing physical visa stickers and Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) with electronic visas, known as eVisas.

This marks a significant shift in how South African visitors, students and workers access and prove their UK immigration status.

What the UK eVisa means for South Africans

For South Africans applying for a UK visa, whether for tourism, study or employment, the biggest change is that there will no longer be a physical visa vignette placed inside your passport.

Instead, your visa will exist as a secure digital record linked directly to your South African passport.

Once your application is approved, you will receive an email confirming your visa decision and instructions on how to create and access your UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account.

This account will store your digital immigration status.

When travelling, UK border officials will verify your permission electronically by scanning your passport.

Your visa details will automatically appear in their system; no sticker, no physical card required.

What is an eVisa?

An eVisa is a digital record of your immigration permission to enter or remain in the United Kingdom.

Rather than carrying a physical document, your visa status is stored securely online and linked to your passport.

This digital system allows:

  • Faster processing at UK border control
  • Reduced risk of lost or stolen documents
  • Easier access to your immigration status online
  • Simple sharing of “Right to Work” or “Right to Rent” verification through a secure share code

For travellers, this means fewer physical documents to manage and a smoother airport experience.

A digital shift

The UK’s move to a fully digital immigration system reflects a broader global shift towards secure, technology-driven border management.

For South African travellers, it introduces a more modern, efficient and secure way to manage UK visas.

While the disappearance of the familiar passport sticker may feel like a big change, the new system ultimately offers greater convenience and improved security, signalling a new era in UK travel.

While the visa outcome is now digital, the application process itself remains largely unchanged.

South Africans must still apply online through the official UK government visa portal.
