Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey has opened up about a deeply personal travel experience that helped him escape the pressures of fame and reconnect with his identity.

Speaking on the “No Magic Pill” podcast with Blake Mycoskie, the 56-year-old actor revealed that he once travelled alone to Peru for 22 days after struggling with the overwhelming effects of stardom.

McConaughey said that the trip became a form of soul-searching after his rise to fame left him questioning what was real in his life.

“I needed to get my feet on the ground,” he explained.

The actor said that he intentionally stepped away from Hollywood and travelled through Peru under the name “Mateo” in an attempt to escape the constant attention that came with being a celebrity.

“So I click out. Boom. Go to Peru,” he said.

“I needed to find it, to check the validation. I knew I had it, I just had to go prove it again.”

McConaughey admitted that fame had blurred the lines between his public image and his true self.

“I’m trying to decipher which part’s real, which part’s bullshit,” he added.

The actor described the first 12 days of the trip as emotionally difficult, saying he struggled with being alone and confronting his thoughts.

However, the experience eventually shifted into something transformative.

“The first 12 days were wonky,” he shared.

But as the days passed, McConaughey said he began to feel at peace with his surroundings and himself.

“I was now at the place long enough to go, ‘I could live this. This could be my existence.’”

According to the actor, reaching that level of comfort helped him realise that he no longer needed to run away from his life back home.

“As soon as you go, ‘I could do this,’ then you’re like, ‘Well, I can return home.’”

One of the most meaningful parts of the journey, McConaughey explained, was meeting people who knew nothing about his celebrity status.

“I needed to meet people who knew me as Mateo,” he said, explaining that fame can make the world feel like “a mirror”.

By the end of the trip, the emotional connections he formed felt genuine and deeply personal.

“At the end of 22 days, the tears in their eyes and the tears in my eyes and the hugs we had on the sadness and happiness of saying goodbye were all based on the man they met named Mateo, who had nothing to do with the celebrity.”

McConaughey said that the experience reaffirmed his sense of self and reminded him that his identity existed beyond Hollywood fame.

“It reaffirmed my own identity that, ‘Oh, I still got it. This is based on me.’”

The actor also reflected on another solo travel experience that inspired his poetry collection, "Poems & Prayers".

McConaughey said that he isolated himself in a remote desert location with no electricity while revisiting old diaries and personal reflections.

“I packed all my diaries away along with my steaks, water and tequila, and went to a place that had no electricity in the middle of the desert,” he explained.

The actor said that these solo trips often begin with emotional discomfort before leading to personal breakthroughs.

The actor’s candid reflections have resonated with fans, particularly those interested in wellness travel, solo travel experiences and the idea of disconnecting from everyday pressures to reconnect with oneself.
