Seven-time Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton has revealed that his favourite travel companion is his mother, Carmen Larbalestier.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Canadian Grand Prix, Hamilton shared that travelling with his mum has become one of the highlights of his year.

“We have a great time, she’s really my best friend,” he said.

The British racing star explained that he had been trying for years to convince his mother to travel with him more regularly.

Until recently, she mainly attended his home race at Silverstone and rarely joined him overseas.

“I’ve been trying to get my mom to come on the road for a while and she hasn’t wanted to travel for the last couple years,” Hamilton said.

He added that he first encouraged her to visit Canada with him last year, hoping to show her destinations such as Lake Louise but plans never materialised.

Larbalestier later promised that this year would be different.

The pair eventually travelled together to China during the Chinese Grand Prix earlier this season, a trip Hamilton described as one of the best experiences they have shared.

“So we did China together, which was honestly the best time we’d ever had together,” he said.

Hamilton revealed that his mother later asked to join him in Montreal for the Canadian Grand Prix, choosing to spend quality time with him rather than travelling with friends.

“She’s like, ‘No, I just want to come spend time with you.’ So, no, we have a great time. She is really my best friend, so I’m really grateful that she’s taken the time to come and be here,” he added.

During their time in China, Hamilton and his mother explored the breathtaking Jiuzhaigou National Park in Sichuan Province.

The pair also stayed at the luxurious Rissai Valley, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, located on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau within a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Hamilton shared several photographs from the trip on social media, showing the pair enjoying horse riding, cultural activities and visiting a Tibetan village.

Reflecting on the experience, Hamilton said the trip left him feeling inspired and refreshed ahead of the race weekend.

“I look forward to coming here every year. This year I wanted to do as much as I could before the race. The past 48 hours have been filled with culture and nature, from Rissai Valley to Jiuzhaigou National Park,” he said.

“Riding horses, visiting a Tibetan village, and spending time with my mum has brought me so much joy. Some of what I’ve seen has been so beautiful, it’s almost indescribable.

"I’m heading to the track feeling so inspired and restored and especially grateful for everything I’ve experienced these past two days."
