Cape Town’s creative community has been invited once again to be a part of the open-air curated group exhibition featured along the Sea Point Promenade.
The 5th Annual Sea Point Promenade Photographic Exhibition Competition has been opened for entries by Orms in collaboration with Canon and SJ Artists.
This year’s theme, Wonders Through Focus, also described as “the worlds within worlds that are revealed through outstanding macrophotography”, focuses on subject matter harder to see.
Orms marketing manager Alex Russel said: “It’s about bringing the beauty of the everyday to the fore, with the sea as its backdrop, there is something incredibly powerful about this exhibition.
“Our key purpose and motivation for this competition is to create a showcase for those who may otherwise not have the chance to exhibit. At the same time, we’re bringing photography to the public, helping to grow appreciation of this beautiful art form.”
SJ Artists’ Shani Judes said public art along the Sea Point Promenade played a vital role in fostering community engagement and cultural enrichment.
“These exhibitions provide a platform where people of all ages and backgrounds come together, sparking conversations, inspiring creativity, and creating a shared sense of pride in our local environment,” Judes said.
Every year, curious visitors indulge in the display of the art etched into the concrete barriers along the shortstretch of walk-way.
Anthea William, 54, from Mitchells Plain, said she takes her family to see the exhibition.
“We love it, it’s really amazing to see pictures through the eyes of the photographers. We get to see images of objects or places that we seldom get access to see in front of us in person.”
In previous years, photographers were invited to explore themes like movement, landscapes, the ocean and birdlife.
The competition is open to all South African residents.
The winning entries are selected by a blind judging panel to ensure complete impartiality, and will earn the photographers prizes to the value of R100 000 from Canon, Orms, Orms Print Room & Framing and Orms Cape Town School of Photography.
