Cape Town - An extensive search and investigation is continuing into the mystery of a woman who is suspected to have gone into the water at Camps Bay beach on Saturday evening, leaving all her belongings behind, and never returned.

The mystery woman was seen by passers-by going into the water but not coming out. She left behind a beach towel, a dress, a hat, and a bag with personal belongings which contained nothing that identified her.

The National Sea Rescue Institute’s (NSRI) Bakoven station commander Luke van Riet said they were called to the beach on Saturday at around 11pm to assist the police in a search for the woman.

This was after police received witness claims that at around 8.30pm, an unidentified white woman, believed to be between 45 and 50 years old, wearing a white bikini, had entered the water and they had not noticed her coming out.

NSRI Bakoven, NSRI Hout Bay and the police conducted a search, which continued into Sunday with still no sign of the woman and reports of anyone missing that could be related to this case.

On Monday Camps Bay police station commander, Captain Keith Chandler said: “No missing persons report has been made to this office yet. There is also no identification of this person.”

The NSRI appealed to anyone with information on this incident to assist police in this investigation and call either Camps Bay Police Station on 0214378150, National Police on 10111, or NSRI EOC on 0870949774.
