Cape Town - An outing with friends ended in tragedy for a local teenager whose body was found floating among a pod of dolphins on Saturday.
She went missing after apparently slipping on the rocks and falling into the ocean near Llandudno beach.
It appears she was swept away by rip currents. The teen was with a group of friends when the incident happened at about 6pm on Friday.
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said her body was found by crew members on a rescue craft about a kilometre from the shore on Saturday.
“During the extensive sea and shoreline search, that included police scuba divers’ and EMS rescue drone-search efforts, crew on a NSRI rescue craft patrolling offshore, reported over marine radio that the body of the teenager was found floating on the surface, accompanied by a pod of dolphins,” he said.
Several residents from Llandudno and surrounds held a candlelight ceremony for the 15-year-old on Saturday.
She is believed to be from Hout Bay.
Members of the SAPS’s Dive Unit recovered the girl’s body and took it to the NSRI’s rescue station in Hout Bay.
The SAPS’s forensic pathologists are conducting a most-mortem, before the teen’s body can be released for burial.
The NSRI said the teen’s family and friends requested privacy during their time of mourning.
