An Eastern Cape man who stabbed his 72-year-old aunt to death because he was enraged when she did not provide him with food has been sentenced to life imprisonment.
The Zwelitsha Magistrate’s Court also handed him an additional 20 years for the attempted murder of his two uncles, four years for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and three years for housebreaking with intent to commit an offence.
The sentences are expected to run concurrently.
Bulelani May attacked his family members on November 18 last year in Nonibe location.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Luxolo Tyali said the 34-year-old attacked his aunt Thelma in her house.
“In the early hours of that morning Bulelani's uncle, Solomzi, 58, was woken up by Thelma’s screams as Bulelani was repeatedly stabbing her. The uncle tried to intervene, but Bulelani stabbed him too, causing a wound on his lower back.
“Buleni left and went to his other uncle, Mandlenkosi May, 61, in an attempt to also murder him. He broke into his house through a window and stabbed him multiple times. After committing the offences Bulelani surrendered himself to the police,” said Tyali.
May made a statement where he confessed to the crimes and revealed his motives.
“He claimed that he killed Thelma because she had not provided him with food, which enraged him. He also admitted to stabbing Solomzi for intervening and Mandlenkosi due to a long-standing family feud over inheritance,” said Tyali.
