Cape Town - Gugulethu police are investigating a double murder after two security guards were shot during a robbery at NY6 and NY38 on Wednesday.
One security guard died on the scene, while the other succumbed to his wounds in hospital on Thursday.
Police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi said the unknown suspects had fled the scene and were yet to be arrested.
“Gugulethu police responded to a complaint on Wednesday, September 21, 2022. Upon arrival at the scene on the corner of NY6 and NY38, they found the body of a 36-year-old man who had sustained gunshot wounds.
“The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. Another male who had also sustained injuries was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment and succumbed as a result of the injuries sustained.
“Gugulethu police are investigating cases of murder and attempted murder,” said Swartbooi.
Gugulethu community police forum chairperson Thembinkosi Mjuza said the suspects had been robbing one of the local shops and had taken the security guards’ guns off them and used the guns to shoot them.
“If you remember correctly, last month we had an imbizo with Minister Bheki Cele, and this is exactly what we were discussing, and how we can prevent such.
“The minister promised to support the (forum) with the necessary equipment, so that we can be able to fight crime.
“We understand that providing equipment is not an overnight thing, but currently things are bad in our communities and there is a lack of police visibility, and it was one of the things we complained about,” said Mjuza.
