Durban — The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal said it would send a strong delegation of more than 900 delegates to the party’s 55th elective conference in Joburg.
This was revealed to the Daily News by the party’s provincial spokesperson, Mafika Mndebele, on Tuesday.
He said the province has capitalised on the extension provided to the branches by the national leadership to wrap up nomination of top six and national executive committee (NEC) members by Monday next week.
Contrary to weekend reports that the province was lagging behind, with less than half of the branches ready, Mndebele said the province was sitting branches at a faster rate than any other province. He said out of 900 eligible ANC branches the province had 749 and 129 were disqualified, while 621 passed the audit and were now ready to go to the conference.
Mndebele said the 146 remaining branches would all organise this weekend, with those who were disqualified.
Mndebele said with the week-long extension the party was adamant that almost all the branches would meet the deadline and the party was hoping to send more than 900 delegates with fewer branches having been disqualified.
Mndebele said in terms of the allocation of voting delegates, the province was supposed to take 924, including provincial executive committee members.
Mndebele said the province was also encouraged that eThekwini region has sat 82 of 111 branches, with only 19 disqualified. He said only 10 branches were remaining to sit in eThekwini and were expected to do so this weekend.
“By the look of (the) rate (at which) we are sitting our branches, surely we will send (a) strong delegation of more than 900 members. Even those branches that had been disqualified are doing (a) re-run to sort out those challenges… ” said Mndebele.
