Durban — The state of Durban’s swimming pools situated along the beachfront have been trending on social media since the day the eThekwini municipality unveiled its readiness to host a safe festive season last Thursday.

Those who visited the beachfront since Thursday did not hesitate to share images of the swimming pools.

In addressing the issue, municipal spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela said the repair of beachfront pools was imminent.

He said that repairs to the popular Rachel Finlayson pool at the Durban beachfront are imminent following the appointment of a contractor who will fix the pool.

Mayisela said the pool has not been operational for a while, much to the disappointment of residents and visitors, but that is soon to be a thing of the past.

eThekwini mayor Mxolisi Kaunda acknowledged the public’s frustration, adding that it was understandable.

“Now that we have appointed a contractor we can get the pool up and running again.

“In addition, officials are also finalising the appointment of a contractor to repair the Children’s Amusement Centre pool, also at the beachfront,” Kaunda said.

In the meantime, the public can use the South Beach paddling pool, which is operational.

In addition, the Kings Park indoor and outdoor pools are also operational and are close to the beachfront.

Across the municipality a further 22 pools are operational.

They are Rainham, Durban North, Pipeline, Tiger Rocks, Anstey’s, Westville, Stanmore, Umlazi D, LT King, Bayview, Arena Park, Alex Bulley, Lamontville, Lahee Park, Ntuzuma, Sutton Park, Tesoriere, Mariannridge, Tills Crescent, Croftdene, Bellair and Umgababa, Mayisela added.
