Durban — With the SANDF reservist who is charged with the murder of his wife headed to pre-trial, the mother of the murdered woman said she was ready for the trial to finally begin.

Gwen Msane expressed these sentiments outside the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday after a pre-trial date was set for her murder-accused son-in-law Lwanda Mxolisi Zungu.

“I am ready to face the trial because we need it to be over. However, with the trial drawing closer I just have fear in me. The reason why I am scared for my life is so far I have been accused of many things by Zungu’s family, things I have not done.

“I’ve been accused of taking Zungu’s clothes from the house as well as his bank card,” the mother said.

Zungu is accused of shooting and killing his wife Tania Msane-Zungu, shooting her once in the head, four times in the neck, and once in her body in their Pinetown home while his two boy children, aged 11 and 15, as well as their grandmother were in the house.

After that, he ran away and handed himself over to the police two days after the shooting.

Zungu is charged with murder read under the Domestic Violence Act which the State alleges was premeditated.

Msane felt that with the tension between her and the Zungu family, her life was not safe.

“Lwanda was not on good terms with his family but now after the murder, his family is close to him. I am afraid for my life and I feel I need protection, especially when I come to court.

“Everything that is missing from the house that they can’t find they have accused of me taking.”

Msane will be a State witness in the trial of her daughter’s murder.

It is alleged that Zungu found out that Msane-Zungu was cheating on him with someone close to him and that might have been one of the reasons why Zungu decided to kill her.

He is currently in custody after having been refused bail in May.

It is alleged that Msane and her grandchildren walked into the couple’s bedroom after hearing her daughter scream to find Zungu standing on the bed and firing several shots at Tania while she was lying on the bed.
