Durban — In a heart-warming ceremony held at the Amanzimtoti Civic Centre, Windy Heights Primary School recently honoured its top-performing pupils during the annual Learners’ Excellence Awards.
The occasion, attended by teachers, pupils, and parents, showcased pupils’ relentless dedication and hard work from the school's Grade R to 7, which is a quintile 2 establishment located in Malukazi, near Isipingo.
Traditionally held each year around this time, the awards aim to recognise the academic excellence of pupils in a celebratory environment.
The event saw award winners from grades 1 to 3 receiving not just their coveted certificates, reading books, and figurines—an established practice of many years—but also a new and exciting reward structure aimed at enhancing learning experiences.
This year, in a significant departure from the norm, the school presented educational laptops and smart watches exclusively to the top achievers in each grade. Excited winners received:
- Grade 1: Educational laptop
- Grade 2: Educational laptop
- Grade 3: Educational laptop
- Grade 4: Smart watch
- Grade 5: Smart watch
- Grade 6: Smart watch
- Grade 7: A laptop.
The principal of Windy Heights, Thembekile Makhanya, expressed optimism about how these new prizes will positively impact the pupils’ academic journeys.
“These gifts will certainly assist students as they continue to strive for excellence in their studies,” she said.
One of the stand-out achievers, Head Girl and Dux award winner, Olwami Mzobe, shared her joy regarding the laptop she received. Her voice filled with gratitude. She took a moment to express her appreciation for her teachers, whose unwavering support has played a crucial role in her academic success.
“I am happy that everyone witnessed what my full potential is and that my trials have been acknowledged,” said Mzobe.
