Durban — A 27-year-old man who had fled KwaZulu-Natal after he had shot and killed a man for allegedly body shaming and teasing him will lodge a formal bail application next week in the Durban Magistrate’s Court.

The man, who had fled KZN and secured employment as a security guard, is alleged to have shot the man four times at close range.

Khonzokuhle Ninela was employed at the Tavern in Quarry Heights where the alleged murder happened and the deceased was a patron known to the accused.

It is alleged that Ninela approached the patron who was seated on the veranda from behind firing the first shot. After the third shot, the man got up and fell to the ground. Ninela allegedly stomped his head with his foot before the man was shot in the head.

It is alleged that the incident happened in broad daylight where there were other people at the tavern which has a CCTV camera.

Ninela was traced by police to Gauteng and was arrested on Sunday night at his place of work.

Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the accused was arrested by Greenwood Park police for the murder of a 26-year-old man which took place on March 10 last year at GwaBabankwali Walk in Quarry Heights.

“The victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was confirmed dead at the scene. The suspect appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, August 27, 2024.”

His case was adjourned for bail investigations ahead of his formal application next week.

The accused was traced by police through his firearm licence. Police, already armed with the information that the accused was a security guard, were able to trace his work address.

According to those who were on the crime scene, Ninela fled vanishing into some nearby bushes.

After the shots rang out one of the onlookers who confronted Ninela about the shooting was threatened by the accused with a gun before he fled without an explanation as to why he had shot the deceased.

It is alleged that before the shooting Ninela, who had been employed as a driver, was unsettled and pacing after he had just arrived with stock.
