Following the announcement of Dr Bishop Jessica Mbangeni’s death, the family has shared details of her memorial service that will take place at 2pm on Friday, September 6, at The Market Theatre in Johannesburg.

Mbangeni, who died on Saturday, August 31, was a renowned and powerful praise poet, known for her performances at prestigious ceremonies such as the Nelson Mandela 46664 concert as well as former president Thabo Mbeki’s inauguration.

The memorial service will see family, friends and colleagues celebrate the life of the poet as well as her contribution to the creative and cultural industries.

A dedicated dress code has been chosen and guests are asked to wear traditional regalia as a reminder of Mbangeni’s love and deep commitment to her culture and heritage.

“She was more than just a world celebrated praise singer and a musical maestro, she was a cultural cornerstone, a beacon of hope and an unstoppable force for artistic expression and advocacy,” the Mbangeni family says.

Known for her colourful and striking traditional outfits, her powerful voice resonated with many. She celebrated the richness of South Africa’s heritage with grace and pride, leaving many inspired, she will be honoured in a way that represents the type of person she was, a proud ambassador of culture.

She will also be celebrated in Jamaica on September 8, as a show of contribution to the global community.
