DURBAN - The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) on Tuesday said that the party is pleased with the easing of the lockdown restrictions announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa based on scientific advice, the advice of experts as well as the experiences of other countries that have lifted all restrictions.

Mkhuleko Hlengwa, IFP national spokesperson and member of parliament, said that the party noted the announcements by President Cyril Ramaphosa relating to the further relaxation of the current Adjusted Lockdown Level 1 restrictions.

“We are clearly at the tail-end of the national lockdown and are now in a transitional period, which will require each of us to put our own resolve to the test and find a way to successfully navigate the ‘new normal'.”

Hlengwa added that it was reassuring that the president consulted widely, from religious leaders to sporting bodies and traditional leaders, when planning for this new phase in the country’s management of the pandemic.

“As the IFP, we will be studying the draft health regulations and call on the public at large to do the same. We will further be submitting detailed comments before the 16 April 2022 deadline.”

IFP called on the public to follow the remaining restrictions.

“We ask that our fellow South Africans continue to respect the few remaining restrictions such as the wearing of masks in indoor spaces and on public transport, as well as the new 200-person limit on funerals, and the reduced social distancing limit of one metre.”

Hlengwa added that the health and safety of the public is the primary concern of the IFP.

“The IFP will continue to support decisions based on scientific evidence, and that are geared towards boosting our economy.”
