Jeep has given us a sneak peek at the third-generation Compass SUV, which is set to go into production from 2025.

The renewed Toyota Rav4 and Volkswagen Tiguan will be built around the Stellantis STLA Medium platform, which also underpins the new Peugeot 3008 and Opel Grandland.

Thanks to this “highly flexible” architecture, the new Compass will be offered with the full ambit of powertrains, including internal combustion, hybrid and fully electric.

Specific powertrain details remain under wraps for now, but the company is promising “best-in-class” performance and state-of-the-art technology across all options.

Jeep revealed a darkened sketch this week, showing us the profile of the new SUV contender. It appears marginally bigger than the current model, with bulging fenders giving it a more rugged appearance while also forging a family resemblance to the smaller Jeep Avenger.

Technically it will have to grow, at least in wheelbase, as the new STLA Medium platform accommodates vehicles that measure between 2.7 and 2.9 metres between the wheels, whereas the current Compass has a wheelbase of 2.63 metres. The platform also allows for a bush-capable ground clearance of more than 220mm.

The Jeep Compass is currently the American brand’s most globally available vehicle, and that looks set to continue with the new model, although South African availability has yet to be confirmed.

The third-gen version will be built in Italy from 2025, with production in North America and other parts of the world starting in 2026.
