A child was tragically killed after being run over by fleeing hijackers on Wednesday night.
The incident took place at a fast food outlet on Main Road in Malvern at around 8.30pm.
According an incident report seen by IOL, the woman allegedly parked her vehicle, a Toyota Fortuner, and went into the restaurant, leaving her two teenage children in the car.
It is further alleged that while she was standing at the entrance of the fast food outlet, a silver vehicle drove into the parking lot.
Four armed men allegedly got out of the car.
One of the suspects allegedly went to stand at the woman’s car door armed with a rifle.
The three other armed robbers approached the woman and demanded her car keys.
It is further alleged the two children saw what was happening, and the girl got of the vehicle and hid underneath while her sibling ran away.
It is alleged that the suspects got the keys and while fleeing and ran over the child.
The child was rushed to hospital in a serious condition and it is understood that she died.
It is understood the vehicle was abandoned in Chesterville.
The South African Police Services (SAPS) have been approached for comment and will be added once received.
Kevin Pillay chairman of the Malvern Community Policing Forum (CPF) described the incident as an unbearable tragedy.
Pillay who went to the scene described it as most heartbreaking.
“When I arrived on scene it was tragic, the mom was hysterical, there was blood everywhere. It was just too sad.”
He said crime in the area has become unbearable in recent weeks, with hijackings and shootings on the increase.
“I want to extend my deepest condolences to the family of the child.”
