A 37-year-old mother who had a suicide pact with her 10-year-old daughter and allegedly watched her overdose on pills while she didn’t take any of them, has been arrested in Alabama, United States.
Brittney Leigh Hensley was arrested months after she went on run following the incident in July 2024 at a motel in Minnesota.
The Sun Herald reported that on the day of the incident, on July 6, police were called around 6pm following reports of an unresponsive child at the extended stay Studio 6 motel where the mother and her daughter had been living.
The publication said when police arrived, they found the girl unconscious.
Police spokesperson, Chief Ryan Lemaire told the US based publication that paramedics rushed the child to a local hospital for treatment and when she regained consciousness, she told police about the suicide pact her mother had made with her.
“She had this suicide pact with her daughter, and the daughter took the pills, but she didn’t. So, the momma started freaking out when her daughter wouldn’t wake up,” Lemaire was quoted as saying.
It was added that Hensley fled the area before she could meet with police investigators and officials with Child Protection Services regarding the criminal allegations.
Police suspected she may have headed to Alabama because of Hensley’s relatives there.
She was arrested after three months, on October 15 and she was recently extradited to Mississippi to face child abuse charges.
The publication added that she appeared in court on Wednesday and her bail was set at 500,000 US dollars (over R8.8 million).
