The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal is appealing for witnesses to come forward with information following the murder of ward councillor, Phendukani Mabhida.

He served as a councillor in Ward 18 under Mandeni Local Municipality.

IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson, Samantha Meyrick, said emergency teams responded to the Sundumbili Clinic on Tuesday for reports of a victim with gunshot wounds.

She said Mabhida was found in critical condition, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

"He was stabilised on scene before being rushed to hospital by IPSS Medical Rescue Advanced Life Support. His sister, who sustained moderate injuries, was also later transported to nearby facility for further care.

"Sadly, the councillor later passed away in hospital," Meyrick said.

ANC provincial secretary, Bheki Mtolo, Mabhida was shot by unknown criminals who pretended to be community members who sought Mabhida's intervention.

"We trust that police will hunt down the heartless murderers and ensure that they are arrested, convicted and given a hefty sentence that will ensure that they rot in jail," Mtolo said.

Mayor of Mandeni council, Councillor Thabani Mdlalose, has extended condolences to Mabhida's family and friends.

"We need prayer at this time. We are very sad about what happened, Councillor Mabhida who always prioritised the needs of his community members.

"I pray his family finds comfort," Mdlalose said.
