A strike by South African Airways (SAA) pilots has thrown holiday travel plans into turmoil, with disruptions expected on key domestic and regional routes, starting on Thursday, December 5.

As the busy December travel season peaks, passengers are urged to act swiftly to manage their itineraries and avoid further inconvenience.

In a statement SAA said in response to the situation a travel advisory has been issued.

"Customers booked to fly on our services on the affected day will be re-accommodated to the next available flights operated by SAA.

"We urge our trade partners to manage their booking queues and communicate these changes to our valued customers accordingly."

SAA said while the strike's length is unclear, it will impact all SAA-operated flights on domestic and regional routes, including Johannesburg to Cape Town, Durban, Gqeberha, Windhoek, and Mauritius.

"However, flights by SAA’s codeshare and Star Alliance partners will operate as scheduled."

Flight Centre South Africa also issued a statement to its customers.

Euan McNeil, Flight Centre South Africa MD said: "We are fully focused on helping our customers navigate this situation and will continue to provide regular updates as new information becomes available."

They urged passengers to reach out to their airlines or travel agents for updates and rebooking options.

"SAA has issued guidelines to accommodate affected passengers on the next available flights"
