The build-up to Nedbank Gravel Burn, the new seven-day, 850km gravel stage cycle race, clicked into high gear with the news of a lucrative sponsorship deal.

The race, which takes in South Africa’s diverse landscapes, from lush coastal forests to the vast Great Karoo, has received the backing of banking giant Nedbank. It will now be known as Nedbank Gravel Burn after a landmark five-year deal.

With $150 000 in prize money, said to be the largest single-event purse in gravel racing history, Nedbank Gravel Burn is set to make an impact on the international stage.

It is poised to attract top professional and amateur riders, who will enjoy remote camps under starry skies.

They will conclude their journey at Shamwari Private Game Reserve, encountering Africa’s iconic big five wildlife.

“This race brings together everything we’ve learned from stage racing and applies it to a new and fast-growing discipline,” said race founder Kevin Vermaak.

“With Nedbank on board from the outset, we have the opportunity to build something truly special – an event that challenges riders, showcases South Africa’s landscapes, and earns its place on the international gravel calendar.”

Riders will traverse ancient trails, cross historic battlefields, and camp beneath the vast Karoo night sky.

“Nedbank Gravel Burn represents an exciting evolution in cycling,” said Jason Quinn, chief executive officer of Nedbank.

“By supporting initiatives that resonate with our values, we aim to empower individuals and foster sustainable growth in the sport, positioning South Africa at the forefront of gravel racing on a global scale.”

The first event will take place from October 26 to November 1.
