Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper William Shongwe has urged South African footballers to plan for life after football, and used Itumeleng Khune as an example.
Khune's career looks like it's run its course after Kaizer Chiefs released him at the end of last season. Since leaving Amakhosi, Khune has revealed his ownership stake in the sports betting company Topbet.
Khune has also posted several photos on Instagram suggesting he's been learning the ropes and is about to get involved in the construction business.
For Shongwe, Khune's move has been positive for his future as professional football careers are often short.
“I’m very happy with what Khune is doing with his life after football,” Shongwe said, according to FARPost.
“If it’s sustaining him and his family, it’s a good thing for him. At the moment, he’s the only one who knows about his future, whether he will continue playing football or retire," said SuperSport commentator Shongwe.
“Current PSL players should follow Khune and invest in businesses that will sustain them and their families in the event that they are not playing football. For me, that’s a good example, and I think players should look into that; it will help them in future.
“One thing for sure, football can be a very short career. Planning and investing is very important whilst you are still playing and earning.”
Khune has yet to announce his future plans for his playing career. The 37-year-old has maintained he is still fit enough to play. However, he has also worked mainly as an SABC pundit during the current Betway Premiership campaign.
While Khune has had a glittering career, which includes 91 international caps for South Africa and FIFA World Cup appearances, it has not been without controversies. Last season, he was stripped of the captaincy and suspended after allegedly arriving to training under the influence of alcohol.
