Police have arrested a suspect in connection with a double murder and house robbery that occurred in the Lyttelton area on the night of January 27.
According to police, the suspect was involved in a scam where he deceived individuals looking to sell their homes by pretending to be a prospective buyer, contacting them under false pretences.
Captain Johan van Dyk stated that on the day of the murder, the suspect arranged to meet with the homeowner, and an altercation ensued in which he fatally stabbed the couple.
“On the day of the murder, the suspect arranged to meet with the homeowner. Once inside the house, the suspect executed his robbery plan. Tragically, the occupants resisted, and during the altercation, the suspect, armed with a firearm and a knife, fatally stabbed two victims, who succumbed to their injuries on the scene.”
He added that members of the Community Policing Forum (CPF), private security, and SAPS responded to the scene, with all necessary forensic teams deployed to process the evidence.
Van Dyk said that on January 28, police officers conducted follow-ups based on the information they received, leading them to a suspect found in possession of the vehicle used in the commission of the crime, a firearm, blood-stained clothing, and stolen property from the crime scene.
The suspect was scheduled to make his first court appearance today.
Acting District Commissioner of Tshwane, Brigadier Kushie Pietersen, commended the collaborative efforts by the law enforcement, Community Police Forum and the Private Security companies through the Eyes and Ears project for their swift and coordinated efforts in apprehending the suspect and ensuring justice for the victims.
