First National Bank and Rand Merchant Bank (RMB) clients were hit with a major glitch which impactied their card payments, ATM services, and digital banking platforms earlier on Friday.

The glitch comes as scores of South Africans who get paid on the 25th were expected to receive their salaries.

FNB said the issue, which affected many of their transactions, had since been resolved by 4pm on Friday.

FNB sincerely apologises to customers for the downtime across multiple services including the FNB app and online banking channels.

“Our IT teams worked quickly to address the matter and our full functionality has been restored.” Sizwekazi Mdingi, FNB’s external communications head said.

According to the outage tracking website Downdetector, there were a huge number of issues reported on the tracking site with FNB from around 12.30pm on Friday.

The main reports that were flagged were related to FNB’s online and mobile banking.

Users also noted that there were issues with logging into the bank's platforms.

Users also went to X to complain about the issue.

User Lebohang said: “Is it just my FNB app that’s bugging?”.

FNB clients trying to access their accounts were getting an error message with a notice stating that their “request cannot be processed”.

A number of FNB clients reported they could not make card payments or use FNB’s ATMs.

The issue has been resolved and Downdetector noted that by 2:30pm.

There is no word as yet if the issue could happen again especially as many South Africans who get paid on the 25th, are expected to receive their salaries this weekend.
