Cape Town - To mark World Tourism Day, Cape Town Tourism launched the third site of the military heritage route, the South African Naval Museum, at the Chavonnes Battery Museum at the V&A Waterfront.
At the historic route, which was launched on Tuesday, one can discover old military weapons and battlegrounds, among other things.
The first site in this new tourist attraction, which was opened at the Castle of Good Hope, was launched on September 1.
It is the oldest building in the country. It used to be the centre of military and civilian life.
On Saturday, Cape Town Tourism, with partners including the City of Cape Town, V&A Waterfront and Chavonnes Battery Museum, officially added the South African Naval Museum to the route - which had been a docking point for ships at the Cape of Good Hope in the mid-1600s.
On Tuesday, the Waterfront museum was the third landmark to be added to that route, with the aim of showcasing Cape Town’s rich military heritage.
Throughout the route along the M6, models and displays provide a fascinating insight into the social life at the time.
Councillor Eddie Andrews, mayco member for Tourism, Events and Economic Development, said at the museum, which still has old armoury and ruins of the old fort: “September marks the start of Tourism Month, which is seen as the most important month for the travel industry. The theme for this year is Tourism for all - promoting universal accessibility.”
The route is user-friendly to everybody, including wheelchair users, families with small children and the elderly .
The route, which is available as a self-drive route, can be explored within three hours, but the organisers advise you to take your time to get a full impression of its heritage sites.
Tourist guides and operators offer their guidance, so new jobs have been created in the tourism industry.
The route is an enrichment, not only for tourists, but for everyone.
