The Metro FM Music Awards 2026 (MMAs) are set to return in spectacular fashion under the theme Icon-Inspired Music Excellence, as the station marks 40 years of shaping South Africa’s sound and cultural landscape.
Taking place on April 25, 2026, at the Durban International Convention Centre, this year’s awards promise a powerful fusion of heritage, artistry and forward-thinking creativity in the heart of KwaZulu-Natal.
The 2026 theme pays tribute to the icons who have influenced South Africa’s music and cultural identity over the past four decades.
It reflects both a deep respect for the past and a bold embrace of the future.
Inspired by Zulu cultural aesthetics, the visual identity of the awards incorporates intricate beadwork rooted in traditional izinhlonzi patterns.
These designs historically communicate identity, status and love, now reimagined in a modern, animated form.
The concept brings these patterns to life through rhythmic transitions, dissolving and reforming in three-beat sequences that echo the pulse of Zulu music.
Central to this is the triangular motif, symbolising Isigqi (rhythm), representing three beats, three points and one continuous loop of musical expression.
According to Kina Nhlengethwa, the theme captures both legacy and innovation.
“The theme combines the best of African luxury and global style, creating an unforgettable experience that’s both nostalgic and forward-thinking. It represents the station’s iconic journey of excellence.”
With Durban as the host city, the awards draw directly from the province’s rich cultural heritage, positioning it as both a backdrop and a central character in this year’s storytelling.
Among the nominees is celebrated Maskandi artist Khuzani Mpungose, recognised for his track "Umanikinikana" in the Best Maskandi category.
Reflecting on his nomination, Mpungose emphasised the significance of the MMAs within the industry: “Being nominated at the Metro FM Music Awards is something I never take lightly. These awards represent one of the highest forms of recognition in South African music, so to be acknowledged again at this level is both humbling and encouraging for me as an artist.”
He highlighted the importance of maskandi’s presence on a national platform: “For maskandi to continue being part of that national conversation is something I am very proud of. It shows that the genre is growing, evolving, and earning the respect it deserves within the broader industry.”
Despite his previous accolades, Mpungose says each nomination carries renewed meaning: “Yes, I have been fortunate enough to win awards over the years, but every nomination still feels like a new journey. It reminds me that nothing is guaranteed, and that every project must be approached with the same level of discipline, passion, and honesty.”
He also underscored the responsibility that comes with representing the genre: “For me, this nomination is not just about celebrating past success. It is about responsibility. It pushes me to keep raising the standard, to represent maskandi at the highest level, and to make sure that the stories we tell as artists continue to connect with people across generations.”
For Mpungose, hosting the awards in KwaZulu-Natal adds deeper meaning to the experience.
“KwaZulu-Natal is not just where I come from, it is the foundation of who I am as an artist. It is where maskandi was born, where the sound was shaped, and where the culture behind the music continues to live every day.”

It is about celebrating the roots of our sound, uplifting the province, and showing the country that the heartbeat of maskandi is strong.”
