If you love halaal certified dining that brings together Indian and Pakistani flavours with a wide fusion menu, My Diners is a strong option.

The family restaurant group started as a small takeaway in 1996 and has grown into a popular chain in South Africa, especially in Durban and Johannesburg.

It is known for offering a mix of traditional dishes and broader comfort food in a casual, family-focused setting.

The Pavilion Mall branch was busy when we visited at around 1pm, with a steady flow of customers and a full dining area. My friend and I were served a variety of dishes and mocktails that reflected the range that the menu is known for.

We started with chicken tikka, marinated in Diner’s special masala. The chicken was tender and well-cooked, with spice that builds gradually without overwhelming the meat.

The giant naan stands out as both a visual and practical highlight of the meal.

It had a smoky finish that made it work well as both a starter and part of a shared table.

The butter chicken stood out and was served with a kandhari giant naan. The sauce was rich and creamy, with a texture that paired well with the soft naan.

It was easy to scoop and balance with the curry. This was the best butter chicken that I have had in a restaurant setting, with flavour that felt steady and well-developed rather than heavy.

We also tried the Desi wraps, including tandoori chicken and kebab made with mince and special spices, served with chips.

Both wraps were well seasoned and held together well, keeping the fillings intact while still delivering flavour in each bite. The chips added a familiar side that worked with the wraps without taking away from them.

The brand is also known for its wide menu that includes Indian and Pakistani dishes such as biryani and karahi, alongside Chinese-inspired dishes like chow mein and manchurian sizzlers, as well as pizza, steaks and toasted sandwiches.

Bunny chow and seafood platters are also part of the offering, which adds to the variety that draws families and groups.

The mocktails offer a refreshing break between the richer dishes, with flavours that are clean and not overly sweet.

We also had mocktails that were refreshing and not overly sweet.

They complemented the meal without overpowering it and offered a light finish between the richer dishes.

Overall, the food is consistent and well prepared with generous portions and a wide range of flavours.

It is a place that works well for groups looking for variety in a relaxed and busy setting.
